Tamara Walker, History, Africana Studies

Tamara will be sharing her work "Queen of the Congos: Slavery, Gender, and Religious Practice in Late-Colonial Lima, Peru," which focuses on an episode from the nineteenth century, when an enslaved woman in Lima found her role as queen of an African-descent confraternity rescinded on the basis of her legal status. Tamara follows her pursuit of redress through the courts, while also examining the ways in which confraternity membership and their attendant religious practices provided enslaved men and women with viable forms of political participation in Lima.
