Gideon Cohn-Postar received his PhD in history from Northwestern University with a specialization in nineteenth century United States history. His research focuses on the Civil War and Reconstruction, political violence and voter intimidation, and the boundaries of political legitimacy and corruption. His work on economic voter coercion has been published in the Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era and the New York History journal. Gideon is currently at work on a book manuscript with the University of Pennsylvania Press entitled Voters of Ordinary Firmness: Economic Coercion and the Rise of Ballot Secrecy.
