Edward Peters (In Memoriam)

Edward Peters (1936-2024) specialized in the early history of Europe, from the second to the seventeenth centuries. His chief interests included political and constitutional history, including church history, intellectual and legal history, and historiography. His research also dealt with various aspects of crime and punishment, on the one hand, and with the idea of curiosity and the limits of intellectual inquiry, on the other. His studies spanned many wide-ranging topics including, the Crusades, the Inquisition, Witchcraft in Europe, and niche topics such as Curiosity and Torture. Peters has been called, “One of the greatest medievalists of his generation.” Even after retirement from teaching, Dr. Peters continued to research, write, and edit scholarly work.
